“Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them. The unfolding of your words; give light; it gives understanding to the simple. I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands. Turn to me and have mercy on me., as you always do to those who know your name. Direct my footsteps according to you word; let no sin rule over me. Redeem me from human oppression, that I may obey your precepts. Make your face shine on your servent and teach me your decrees. Streams of tears flow from my eyes. For your law is not obeyed.”Psalm 119:129-136
God gives us his command to follow him, obey his laws, and ignore sin; easy; not so much. God knows that we can not possibly follow his statutes completely. He knows that we fail in our attempt to keep sin from coming into our hearts more often than not. Then why would he put these laws over our heads, knowing that we can not possibly follow them?
Every step forward leads to three steps back. It’s a race that is impossible to win. That is why God puts such a high mountain ahead of us to climb. He knows we can’t climb it; we will fail every time. He wants us to realize that no matter how hard we try, following his laws will not bring us closer to Him; he wants us to know that the only way we can get closer to him is to have faith through the death of his son on the cross, we have been saved. Only then will we know the pathway to his love and forgiveness.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever should believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”John 3:16
